Heathly dog treat alternatives

With all the dog treat recalls in the news, it’s hard to know what is safe for your dog. So listed below are some healthy and low calorie alternatives to processed treats.

Please remember when introducing a new food, to do it in small quantities and one new food at a time.
Veggies – Cut them up into small bite size pieces and the dogs love them. OK not all dogs like all vegetables, but most do.

Broccoli
Carrots
Celery
Cucumber
Green beans
Pumpkin

Never – Onions and garlic

Fruits – remove
all seeds and pits

Apples (no seeds or core)
Bananas – great frozen too.
Blueberries
Cantaloupe
Mango
Raspberries
Strawberries

Never – Grapes or raisins

Create your own frozen treat in ice cube trays. Use plain yogurt and bananas or chicken broth (low sodium). My favorite for puppies is placing part of your puppy’s

dinner in a Kong toy and topping it with peanut butter or yogurt and freezing it. Great for crate training.

If you like to bake, there are tons of dog treat recipes on-line. Find the ingredients that work best with our dogs’ diet.
Bon appétit
